Climate change 'sceptic' Ian Plimer argues CO2 is not causing global warming - Telegraph

THIS IS A COMMENT I THOUGHT WORTH SOME ATTENTION... I HAVE BEEN ARGUING THIS FACT FOR YEARS.

I have advanced degrees in oceanography and tropical meteorolgy, and have been working in both of these fields since 1975. Bottom line: carbon dioxide is not a poison; it is not a pollutant. It is a natural-occuring gas that is essential for life on earth; without CO2 all plant life would cease to exist and O2 levels would not be replenished.

CO2 in our atmosphere occurs at absolutely miniscule levels. The atmosphere is comprised of some 79% nitrogen (N2) and 20% oxygen (O2). The next most prevalent gas is argon. CO2 comes in at number four on the list and represents a whopping .038% of the atmosphere. One way to look at this is that if you had a jar full of 10,000 molecules of air, 7900 molecules would be N2, 2000 would be O2, and a grand total of not quite 4 molecules would be CO2. At the level that CO2 exists in our atmosphere, THERE IS ABSOLUTELY NO WAY THAT IT HAS ANY EFFECT WHATSOEVER IN TEMPERATURE RISE (Global Warming/Climate Change) ON OUR PLANET! If .038% of any substance can cause "global warming" then we should be using that substance to power our electrical grid and run our autos! This entire premise is asinine and is 100% politically motivated.

I went back to one of my old college text books from the early 1970's to review its discussion on atmospheric CO2. We know that CO2 levels are in fact going up, and they have been for some time. In 1955 CO2 levels were around .032%, in 1972 they were at .035%, and now they are at .038%. What did the earth's temperature gradient look like during this period? The earth was cooling from the early 1950s until around 1980, it warmed for the next period until around 1998, and it has been cooling ever since.

Bottom line: CO2 levels are increasing, CO2 exists at absolutely microscopic levels in our atmosphere, and there is absolutely no correlation whatsoever between rising CO2 levels and temperature.

Someone (anyone), find me a peer-reviewed study that shows any correlation with temperature increase based on increasing levels of CO2 at the microscopic levels that CO2 exists in nature. I have been trying to find such a study for years, and it simply does not exist. All the pro-global warming crowd can cite are mathematical "models." Folks, any model can be manipulated by whoever develops it; it is garbage-in, garbage-out. Science is not based on "models."

  1. RePosted the above comment... it looks like the end of each line was cut off...
